Gauteng is the financial hub of South Africa, the economic hub of the Southern African region and the gateway to doing business in the rest of Africa. Gauteng contributes 33% to the national economy and a remarkable 10% to the GDP of the entire African continent.
The West Rand District of Gauteng, consists of four local municipalities, namely, Mogale City, Merafong City, Randfontein and Westonaria. It lies to the west of Johannesburg, about 50km from O R Tambo International Airport and next to Lanseria International Airport, which offers airlinks to Africa.
The West Rand incudes the site of the one of the greatest paleontological discoveries, a World Heritage Site, marketed as the Cradle of Humankind. It also has a long history of mining – the first gold reef discovery in South
Africa was in Mogale City in 1881. Mining-related business still enjoys a comparative advantage in the region.
